The small mammals we normally see from day to day include and some common conditions

Rabbits

  • Myxomatosis (viral infection spread by fleas, mite and mosquitoes) Vaccine available
  • Abscesses

  • Gut stasis
  • Dental overgrowths

Rats and mice

  • Neoplasms ( Certain types of cancers)

Ferrets

  • Aplasitic anemia in gills (This occurs when high levels of estrogen are produced during the heat cycle and this suppresses the production of the red and white cells in the bone marrow
  • Cardiomyopathies (Thinning or thickening of the walls of the heart)
  • Cataracts
  • Intestinal foreign bodies
  • Intestinal and external parasites
  • Distemper virus (Not that common anymore)

Please note if you would like to travel abroad with your ferret it will need to have a passport and be vaccinated against rabies

 

Chinchillas, guinea pigs, gerbils and hamsters
