Neutering is the removal of the reproductive organs of your pet, to prevent them from having unwanted litters. It will also prevents some serious illnesses and cancers.

Your pet may be prone to put on a bit of weight after the procedure but cutting their food down by 10% will prevent your pet from being obese.

Castration

Castration is a term used to describe the complete removal of both testicles under anaesthetic. This is performed through an incision just in front of the scrotum.

Spay

The term to Spay an animal is used to describe the complete removal of the uterus and ovaries under anaesthetic. This is performed through an incision into the abdominal cavity.

When is the best time to have my pet neutered?

Cats:
Cats can be spayed and castrated any time after they are 6 months old

Dogs:
Female dogs can be spayed after they are 6 months old. It is important that you do not book your bitch in whilst she is in season or having a false pregnancy. Please telephone the surgery for further advice.

Male dogs can be castrated any time from 6 months old.
