Here at Vine Tree Vets we recommend vaccinating your horse against two important diseases – equine influenza (flu) and tetanus.
The primary course of vaccination can be started from 6 months of age and involves three injections:
2nd injection 4 weeks later (FEI regulations state 21-90 days after 1st)
3rd injection 5 months later (FEI regulations state 150-215 days after 2nd)
Thereafter a routine annual vaccination is required to ensure continued protection against influenza. The vaccination that we stock here at Vine Tree Vets is a combined flu and tetanus vaccine made by MSD called ‘PREQUENZA TE’. Tetanus vaccination should be done a minimum of every 2 years, however at Vine Tree we are unable to stock a separate tetanus vaccine so we give the combined vaccination every year. We do keep tetanus anti-toxin if your horse is not vaccinated and should require immediate protection in the event of injury.
